Coffee Connection: An Introduction To Our Micro-business!

Once a week, my students and I run a "Coffee Connection" micro-business to fuel the caffeine habit of my fellow teachers. 

I love this time because there are SO many skills worked on! From functional
reading, filling the order, following multi-step directions, fine motor and OT skills development (like pincer grasp, sorting, pouring hot liquids, placing lids securely on the cups, etc), money management (making correct change, counting the money earned and writing it down), social and communication skills (initiating a conversation, conversational turn-taking, exchanging social niceties, customer relations, asking questions, maintaining a positive affect through the exchange - this is so hard for some students, etc) and so much more!

The prep is definitely time consuming, but it is worth it to give the students the opportunity to refine their skills with real-world experience, which is often unpredictable and causes them to learn flexibility in the process.
